  1. Title: The day of the Jackal
    Reviewer: Richard Clarkson
This book is fiction but it is based on the real story of the man who tried to assassinate Charles de Gaulle, the French President, in the early 1960’s by a French terrorist group. In the story we discover how a militant right-wing group of soldiers who believed de Gaulle had betrayed France by granting Algeria independence hired a British assassin to shoot de Gaulle. We follow this “Jackal” as the group names him as he makes his preparations as well as the efforts of Claude Lebel, the great but self-effacing detective who tries to track him down.
I love this book and have read it several times. I enjoy reading about the detailed preparations of the assassin, the diligence of the detective in tracing him and all the politics in France (and England) which almost derailed these efforts and led to de Gaulle’s death.
